Help with your specific situation

We have helped countless people with their specific applications and cannot possibly cover everything on this website. That is why we want to be able to talk with you on our toll free nationwide number, 1-800-305-2688 (If we are not in, please leave your name, phone number and any questions you may have and your call will be promptly returned), or by email in regards to your questions.

Our goal is to help you save time and money by recommending the best solution that provides the maximum performance and durability for your vehicles or equipment.

To that end, below are some guidelines that may help you answer some general questions.

What type of oil do I need?

To see which AMSOIL products are available for your particular situation, please look in our Product Applications section and click on the appropriate picture.

If you are not sure on which 30 weight motor oil to use click here.

Are you looking for a 5w-20 motor oil or does your owner's manual specify using a 5w-20 engine oil - why did they choose this oil and do you really need it?

Gasoline engines:
If you are looking for the absolute best in engine protection and fuel mileage improvement for your gasoline engine, we recommend using the Series 2000 0w-30 Motor Oil. It designed for up to 35,000-miles or 1-year drain intervals. The convenience of fewer oil changes more than makes up for the higher cost.

If cost is a factor, then we would recommend using our longtime standard motor oils (5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40). They are the next best thing to the Series 2000 0w-30 and still do an excellent job of protecting your engine. They are designed for up to 25,000-miles or 1-year between oil changes in gasoline engines.

For some of you that have a hard time transitioning to 25,000 or 35,000 mile drain intervals, we also offer our XL-7500 Motor Oils (5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40). They are designed for 7,500-miles or 6-months between oil changes in gasoline engines.

Diesel engines:
If you are looking for the absolute best in engine protection and fuel mileage improvement for your diesel engine, we recommend using the Series 3000 5w-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil. It designed for extended drain intervals. The convenience of fewer oil changes more than makes up for the higher cost.

If cost is a factor or you have an older diesel engine, then we would recommend using our longtime standard 15w-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil. It does an excellent job of protecting your engine and is designed to deliver 1,000,000 miles for over-the-road trucks before overhaul . It is also an extended drain oil.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils should only be used in mechanically sound engines for optimum benefits and economy.

Is anything special required when converting to AMSOIL in a new or old engine?

What type of oil filter should I use?

You are probably using an oil filter you picked out, saw on a television commercial or your mechanic installed. Take a look at how AMSOIL SDF oil filters compare to other leading oil filter brands and you will see why we recommend AMSOIL oil filters.

They are also the only oil filter capable of going 12,500 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first) before they have to be changed in a gasoline engine. If you have a light duty diesel engine you will change them at 7,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first).

Our Oil & Air Filter Lookup Guide will help you determine which AMSOIL oil filter to use.

Does it matter whose air filter I use?

Your car's engine "inhales" air that is mixed with fuel for combustion. But air contains an incredible amount of suspended dirt - typically 400 tons of it in a cubic mile.  Much of this is microscopic dirt, extremely abrasive, that can cause serious damage inside the engine.

Consequently, an air cleaner must not only trap as much grit as possible, but it should do so without "smothering" the engine, restricting its vital airflow. Thus the most desirable performance characteristics for an air cleaning device are high dirt-trapping efficiency, and minimal airflow restriction as the dirt accumulates.

In short, yes it does matter which air filter you use.

Take a look at how AMSOIL air filters compare to K&N and other types.

Under normal conditions, AMSOIL air filters will provide unparallel performance for years. They must be cleaned and re-oiled every 25,000-miles or 1-year (whichever comes first). In dusty driving conditions they should be cleaned more frequently.

Our Oil & Air Filter Lookup Guide will help you determine which AMSOIL air filter to use.

What about transmission fluid?

The only true universal transmission fluid is AMSOIL Universal ATF, and this is the one we recommend for most applications.

Heat is the #1 killer of automatic transmissions.

Did you know that just by reducing friction in your transmission:

  • The temperature of transmission fluid is lowered, which in turn greatly extends your transmission life
  • Your fuel economy increases
  • You get smoother shifting

You cannot get any of the above benefits by using a petroleum transmission fluid. But when using AMSOIL ATF, in addition to the above benefits you also get:

  • Parts that won't overheat

  • Easier cold weather starting (flows down to -69), allowing for faster warm-ups

  • Extreme hot and cold temperature protection

  • Extended drain intervals (up to three times longer than OEM recommendations)

  • A transmission fluid that can be used in almost all vehicles (see specifications)

Anything else?

Absolutely, AMSOIL also sells gear lubes, greases, motorcycle and 2-cycle oils, fuel additives, etc. Please see our Products page to find what you are looking for.

Some people start with just switching over their motor oil and filter first. Then, after they realize the convenience of changing their oil once per year and the money this saved them, along with a typical 3%-5% fuel mileage increase, they take the next step.

Purchasing an AMSOIL air filter and switching to AMSOIL transmission fluid also. Some will also switch to AMSOIL Gear Lubes for their differentials.

By adding a little performance improver gasoline additive, you will be cleaning out your fuel system, reducing emissions, improving your idle and helping to increase the performance of your engine.

Just change a little bit over at a time. Eventually you'll have a much better performing and protected vehicle that should last far longer than your OEM manufacturer ever intended.
