One of the most common questions we are asked is what is the recommended transmission lube for Harley-Davidson, both big twins and sportsters?(see chart below)
|
AMSOIL Recommendations |
|||
| Engine | Transmission | Chaincase | |
| 883cc and 1200cc Sportster | 20w-50 Motorcycle oil | 20w-50 Motorcycle oil | |
| 1340cc and 1450 cc models | 20w-50 Motorcycle oil | Series 2000 75w-90 Gear Lube | 10w-40 Motorcycle oil |
| Shovelheads, Panheads & Flatheads |
SAE 60 Racing oil | match existing requirements | match existing requirements |
These recommendations are, in our opinion, superior to using one oil in all three areas as H-D recommends with Syn3. While you can certainly use AMSOIL 20w-50 motorcycle oil in all three areas (engine, transmission and chaincase), it is our recommendation that it is better to use the specific products outlined above for superior performance.
Learn the facts about Harley-Davidson Oil in this eye-opening article
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 and 20W-50 motorcycle oils give motorcyclists what they need: Superior wear protection for high- stress motorcycle engines and transmissions that stay clean and deposit-free.
Please beware: Prior to H-D releasing a synthetic we have found that many Harley-Davidson dealership technicians are telling customers that synthetic motor oil is "too slippery" and can cause flat spots on roller bearings because the bearings won't turn.
Synthetic motor oils are no more "slippery" than petroleum motor oils. The tractive coefficient, which is the measure of the case with which a lubricant facilitates sliding, is essentially the same for both petroleum oils and synthetics.
Synthetic motor oils are also used in many production and racing cars that have sophisticated roller follower technology and they have absolutely no problems whatsoever with roller bearings not turning.
This should also make you wonder why, all of a sudden, H-D is saying "NO PROBLEM" to using Screamin' Eagle Syn3 synthetic oil on your H-D roller bearings.
Unfortunately for H-D and all their riders, they did not have AMSOIL manufacture a synthetic oil for them. Once again H-D oil (Screamin' Eagle Syn3) looses to AMSOIL in the 4 ball wear scar test by leaving a scar 79% bigger than AMSOIL.
